I enjoy reading your blog, I like your energy and your recommendations for social media professionals.
While paper has less impact, I reject your proposition that paper is worthless.
I don’t see the choice as being between old school marketing with the established methods of determining ROI and web 2.0 based social media marketing with fuzzy, softer, metrics being created to justify budgets.
I see smart businesses hiring old school marketing warriors with web 2.0 chops. Superior marketers to the either/or applicants, able to bring more skills with greater accountability to bear on behalf of their employers.

Great point, John. Paper is not completely worthless (yet), and I agree 10,000 percent with your last paragraph. I think folks like myself (who grew up in newspapers and then talk radio) have an awesome opportunity to provide great value if we’re willing to reinvent ourselves and get out front of the Social Media curve. “Old” PR/Marketing pros have the experience you can’t teach, and if they brush up the Web 2.0 chops, it’s win-win for employee and employer.
